Convergence Central Theme at 2009 Modeling & Simulation Leadership Summit

Norfolk, VA. From the keynote to panelists to conversations with Boeing and Northrop Grumman, the convergence of video games with modeling and simulation is on everybody’s agenda. At the 2009 Modeling and Simulation Leadership Summit, the theme of convergence was expressed best during the Keynote by Dr. Anita Jones. In 1995, Dr. Jones saw the future. She pioneered a relationship between the defense sector and the entertainment industry: the defense entertainment complex.

During Dr. Jones’ tenure as the U.S. Department of Defense’s Director of Defense Research and Engineering, she oversaw the department’s science and technology program, research laboratories, and DARPA. She led the exploration of both entertainment and military applications of modeling and simulation technology. She examined ways in which the two communities could better leverage each others capabilities to strengthen the overall national technology base.

The entertainment industry and the U.S. Department of Defense--though differing widely in their motivations, objectives, and cultures--share a common, growing interest in modeling and simulation. In entertainment, modeling and simulation technologies drive multi-billion dollar markets in video games, virtual reality attractions and theme parks, and film. In the DOD, modeling and simulation provides a cost-effective means of training troops, developing doctrine and tactics, and evaluating new and upgraded systems.

Her work identified common research challenges in immersive synthetic environments, networked simulation, and computer-generated characters, as well as the hardware and software tools needed to create simulated environments. Her team reviewed the business models of the entertainment and defense communities and identified the need for continued support of multidisciplinary educational and research initiatives in modeling and simulation.
